This spoon was hand carved from birch wood, using only hand tools such as axe and knives. The handle was kolrosed with a basket-weave pattern and an aegishjalmur (Icelandic rune) in the centre. Kolrosing is a process in which a pattern is carved into the wood, then a fine dark powder (coffee in this case) is rubbed into the grooves, then sealed using burnishing and hardening oil. It is a tradition dating back to the Viking age here in Scandinavia.
It measures about 15 cm in length, and is a typical size for traditional Scandinavian eating spoons.
Wash using soapy water. Do not leave to soak or use a dishwasher. This is especially important if one doesn’t want the kolrosing to fade too much.
