Emmet is using the broomcorn polisher and the porcelain burnisher as part of his spoon carving process to further compress and smooth the surface. According to him, these are his secret sauce that give his spoons the slight mellow roundness that distinguishes them. After carving but before finishing, he rubs each spoon down with the burnisher and then the polisher, using the side of the broomcorn polisher, not the end. This 1, 2 punch has the effect of softening the ridges between the facets and polishing the surface.

They are not abrasive, so they will only take you so far, but they are integral to creating the slightly rounded, polished look that Emmet finds appealing and pursues in his own work.

After trying different methods of burnishing and polishing his spoons, Emmet decided to design the porcelain burnisher and give it the shape that currently has. He got also interested in French polisseurs, broomcorn scrubbers which have been used for centuries as an alternative to sandpaper to finish hand planed furniture.
