Eating spoon made from Mango wood in Barbados. Mango trees are something we have in abundance in Barbados, can find one on every corner. Mango wood is unique, it has beautiful colours when splalted, smells sweet like fermented sugars, takes a beautiful finish, and is quite dense. This last set of wood I got was special in that it came from an old tree, and was the first set I’ve seen that had nice golden brown heartwood.
This is my go to form for eating spoons, nothing fancy, just a functional piece that looks good. The uniqueness of this mango wood, with its colours and smooth finish, make it a great addition to any spoon lovers collection.
To care, hand wash only and avoid leaving to soak in water for an extended period. Wooden spoons benefit from regular use, and I believe get more beautiful over time. To extend its life I’d recommend occasionally given it rub down with a small amount of oil (whatever you have in the kitchen is ok, but walnut or flaxseed oil is best) and letting it sit in the sun for a few minutes.
