In order to be able to attend this class you need to have at your disposal

  1. A Swiss-style chip carving knife and
  2. A basswood board with the chip carving pattern already transferred on it. (We will send you by email  the pattern in PDF format to print at home prior to the class).

How to prepare the basswood board

  1. Print in a laser printer or make a photocopy from your inkjet printout. Make sure you print the patterns at 100% scale.
  2. Transfer the pattern onto the basswood board by using an iron at its highest temperature setting. (No steam)

About the chip carving class with Daniel Clay

In this 4-hour online class you will learn the basics of Swiss-style chip carving, including:

  1. Proper knife technique & safety
  2. How to carve basic and advanced chip shapes
  3. Sharpening principles and equipment
  4. Suggestions for finishing chip carvings
  5. Class will also include open-ended discussion and Q&A

You will receive a Zoom link invitation and a PDF of class project patterns via email after you have purchased the class.

On demand
A link to the video recording of the class will be also available to the participants.

Skill level
This class is open to everyone, regardless of skill level — from those with no experience, to long-time carvers who want to brush up on their technical skills, and experienced woodworker who want to add chip carving to their technical repertoire. Everyone is welcome.

NOTE: The chip carving boards and knife in the pictures are for demonstration and they are not included with the purchase of this class.
