I’ve been hand carving spoons for a few years now. It all started when I was visiting a friend and spotted some hand carved spoons on his table and asked where he had bought them. He told me he had carved them himself and I didn’t believe him, so he showed me how to do it with an axe, straight knife and a hook knife. I was fascinated and jumped at the chance when he offered to loan me the tools to have a go.  One chopped out spoon led to another and with each one I learnt a little bit more and carved a little better…. To me there is far more to spoon carving than just creating the physical object itself – the whole process of handling and carving the freshly cut wood is an interaction between the carver and materials being used, a connection to the woodland itself and the time spent allows a certain level of detachment from the modern world around us; a meditative therapy of sorts.  “Green Woodworking” is a big topic with many disciplines, spoon carving being only a small part of it and likewise hand carved spoons are only part of what I offer
