Deborah Schneebeli Morrell

United Kingdom

I trained in fine art and have exhibited my work widely but I have always been interested in making objects and love to explore different materials. This interest and ability led me to writing over 30 craft books.

In the last years I have discovered spoon carving and its endless possibilities; embracing style, form, function, tradition and aesthetics. I have taught widely and have made a number of videos with @zedoutdoors, these have given me an opportunity to connect with an inspiring, generous international spoon community. I co-curated the recent “Spoons are Good for You” exhibition which explored the therapeutic and transformational aspects of spoon carving and we are currently working on making it into a book.

Like many spoon carvers I am inspired by the natural world… I love to investigate different species of shrub and tree. From garden, field, woodland and street… and enjoy the magical discovery of splitting a branch and seeing the colour and grain within. The process of transformation from the tree to spoon is a valuable journey with so much to learn. My practice allows me a sense of stillness in a challenging world. Spoon carving enhances my interest in the value and meaning of making.
