I make spoons and other kitchen utensils using my hands and a few simple tools.
When I was young my family lived in a rural part of California. We had access to lots of wild space, so my most vivid memories as a child were playing, experimenting, and working with natural objects. Fast forward 30 years and I’m still doing the same thing!
I now live in Liverpool and enjoy exploring the wilds of the UK. I have a small plot of mature woodland in North Wales where I source most of the wood for my spoons. It mostly contains ash, oak, elm, cherry, beech, and hazel. I started carving shortly after purchasing the plot – there was so much beautiful material freely available that I just had to start making things out of it! I carve nearly every day, honing my skills with the few hand tools I use, and I am happy to share some of my designs with you on Spoon Crank.
For me, using hand carved wooden spoons is a way to bring nature into our homes, connect with our simpler and slower past, and encourage mindfulness about the earth and our future in it.
