Wood Carving Festival in Denmark

Have you heard of Snittefest?

Inspired by the first Täljfest at Sätergläntan, Snittefest was started in 2015 in the woods outside Roskilde in Denmark. Since then, this 2½ day wood carving festival has run annually and brough many happy carvers together.

Snittefest takes place in the woods outside the city of Roskilde at an old farmhouse turned into a nature center. During the day there are a number of workshops which has included everything from spoons and shrinkpots to chairs, pole lathe turning and much more. There is also always a family workshop for kids and their parents as one of the aims of Snittefest is to introduce woodcarving to more people.

Most of the workshop teachers and participants are of course Danish, but guests from Scandinavia, England and even Uganda has enjoyed joining Snittefest over the years.

The level of the participants is very varied. Some are seasoned wood carvers while others just carve this one time of year. They come back to enjoy the “hygge” especially in the evening when the campfire is lit. Then people sit around the fire where they continue to carve. If you are too tired to carve there is surely enough energy for a few beers and more chat before turning in for the night at the nearby tent camping site.

This year Snittefest takes place on the 25th-27th of august and you can check out this year’s workshops on Instagram @snittefest_dk and at snittefest.blogspot.com where you can see pictures and read about previous festivals.
